Lightning Ridge is a small outback Australian town in Northern New South Wales. The area is known for the mining and prospecting Black Opal and other Opal gemstones.
Lightning Ridge is the land of the traditional owners the Yuwaalaraay* People, who were displaced in the mid 1800's and into the late 1800's by the establishment of colonial pastoral stations. The first opal shafts were dug and 'Black Opal' soon attracted attention with the establishment of mining towns many Yumaalaraay people stayed on as labourers, but were increasingly dispersed in the early 20th century.
Lightning Ridge is stilled mined today; it's estimated that of the opal in the area only 4% has been mined to date.
